Below are some of the frequently asked questions regarding the show & submission process:

1) What kind of Art can I submit? Any kind. All types of artistic disciplines and types of media are represented at our event.

In our visual art gallery: we show every kind of visual art; from paintings to sculptures to mixed media to graphic design to assemblage and more. We prefer a collection of pieces, (it is rare for us to show only one piece, but not impossible).

In the performance center: we show a large variety: from short films, to live performances of all types of music, dance, spoken word, scenes, readings of short stories, and interactive experiences.

2) You say the art selected must be consistent with a Christian Worldview . . . what does that mean?

Let’s first start with what that doesn’t mean. It doesn’t mean the art has to have a salvation message attached to it. The subject matter also doesn’t have to be about a Bible story or a specifically Christian subject matter. Art that includes these subject matters are welcome to be submitted provided they meet the submission criteria.

However, we believe art created from a Christian Worldview will not be gratuitously violent or salacious, nor will it be saccharin sweet -avoiding or ignoring the evil within this world. A Christian Worldview leaves room to explore evil and good, the plight of the just and the unjust, the so-called ‘sacred’ and the mundane. The Bible had no problem with these topics, so neither do we.

For Example: Art that fits a Christian Worldview will not glorify evil. Why? Because there are only two real Biblical responses to evil: judgment and redemption. To deny the sin within or without is to betray what we know in our own hearts, but to deny the effects and cost of sin is to deny what we know of a God who is just.

3) What is the submission criteria?

All art, whether visual or performance, must be submitted by the artist themselves(or their staff), and must include a copy or CD/DVD of the work with the completed submission paperwork. If you do not have a CD/DVD of a performance piece, an audition in Los Angeles, CA will be required.

Performance pieces and short films should not exceed 15 minutes. There is no limit on the number of visual pieces that can be submitted; however, we prefer visual artists to submit a body of work versus one singular piece.  Also, due to spacial limitations, we may need to work with visual artists on choosing specific pieces.

Artists must submit their work with the completed submission form and all of its listed requirements. AEM will not accept incomplete or late submission packets.

4) Do I have to attend the event?

Yes. You and one guest will receive free admission. If you are unable to attend the event please do not submit your work, it will not be accepted. If you are a group submitting a performance piece(for example a dance troupe or band) all of the performers will receive free admission and a complimentary pass for one guest.

5) How do I get my visual art to the event?

The visual artists are responsible to bring and mount their art themselves. We have a gallery manager who will show you the space you have to display or hang your pieces, then you will be responsible to bring your artwork in a format that is ready to be shown. AEM does not frame or mount your work and will not incur cost to show your work. If your work is chosen you will be contacted and all details related to the space you will have, etc. will be given to you for your planning purposes.

6) Are children welcome or is there childcare?

This event is not designed for children and there is no childcare available for the event.

7) What kind of facilities are there for performing artists?

There is a stage, microphones, lighting, projection capabilities and much more. Again, upon acceptance you will be contacted to set up and evaluate the audio, video, and physical needs for your performance. The venue has very high quality equipment and the sound engineers are of the highest quality.

8) How long can the performing arts pieces and short films be?

Since we do have time constraints, at this time we are limiting the performing arts pieces and short films to 15 minutes per piece.

9) Do I get comp tickets?

Each artist receives free admission for themselves and one guest. If you are a group that is submitting something to perform, each person performing will receive free admission for themselves and one guest.

10) When is set up for the visual artists and sound checks for the performing artists?

The night before the event (Thursday Night, October 2, 2008)is when the visual art is set up. The day of the event (Friday Night, October 3, 2008)is when the performing artists can do their sound checks. Again, upon acceptance into the show, all the details for the event will be given to you.

11) Will AEM pay travel costs for accepted artists?

No. You are responsible to bring yourself and your work to the event. However, we will be happy to connect you with affordable housing, either through staying with folks from local churches to affordable hotels, but all costs related to performing or showing your work must be picked up by you the artist. Please remember this event is in Los Angeles and the public transportation system is not a convenient or easy system to utilize. We recommend renting a car for your transportation needs.

12) Is this event affiliated with a specific church or denomination?

No. AEM is a non-denominational, non-profit organization, with participating artists representing many different evangelical churches and denominations from around the world. Although this event utilizes the facilities of the Vineyard Christian Fellowship Westside, and we have a wonderful relationship with them, AEM is a not a ministry of Vineyard.

13) Where do the proceeds go?

Any proceeds from An Evening of Arts and Entertainment help defray the cost of producing the event and help support the ministries of AEM.

If you have additional questions feel free to E-mail the Producer of the Event, Michelle at: mich@a-e-m.org
