College Art Departments

1) Westmont College Arts Department: The Art Department at Westmont is dedicated to help students discover and develop their creative abilities and to be attentive to the power of the visual arts in our world. Accompanying the serious study of the visual arts is the motivation to integrate artistic pursuit with the development of a maturing Christian faith. Our program emphasizes basics and breadth. The central core of the Art major is based on sound understanding of the principles of design, it focuses on two-dimensional media, and is articulated through foundational and intermediate studies in drawing, computer graphics, painting, interpretive printmaking, and photography. Three-dimensional investigations in crafts, ceramics and stone carving, as well as the in-depth study of art history, compliment the core classes. Both studio and art history courses are designed to stimulate critical thinking and intellectual curiosity about the visual realm. Westmont's art courses are open to all students.
Distinctive Features
Studio and art history courses are held in the Art Center on lower campus. sculpture has its own facility on upper campus as does computer graphics and photography. The nine department members (4 full time, 5 part time) are all specialists in their respective fields, and all are active in their scholarly pursuits. An on-site art gallery serves both the Westmont community, and the Santa Barbara community at large with its exhibition schedule, lectures by guests artists, and a supportive community-based arts council that helps to oversee the gallery program. The Reynolds Gallery gives students the opportunity for work and internships in gallery management and curatorial practice. A number of art related off-campus program opportunities are available for the serious art student in England, Italy, New York and San Francisco.

2) Roberts Wesleyan College: Roberts Wesleyan College is a Christian liberal arts school, located in Western New York. The Art Department offers degrees in studio art, studio art with a graphic design concentration, and art education. The Department in nationally accredited and an active member of the National Association of Schools in Art and Design.

3) Gordon College: The Department of Art at Gordon College is housed in a beautiful new facility named Barrington Center for the Arts. The department offers three major areas of concentration - painting, sculpture, and printmaking/drawing, and is in the development stages for a unique graphic design/web-newmedia curriculum with internships in digital design firms. Our curriculum bridges tradition to innovation and contains a strong figurative foundations program with use of professional models. Our gallery program is distinctive and has exhibited shows of national importance ranging from traditional realist painting to conceptual and installation arts.

4) Houston Baptist University: The Department of Visual Arts is dedicated to producing artists of unique creative thought and outstanding Christian faith. Its programs enable students to develop an understanding and appreciation for the meaning of past and present visual arts in society, acquire a broad experience in the creative use of methods and materials, and attain confidence in their ability to integrate their faith, knowledge and creativity.

5) Indiana Wesleyan University: Art courses have been taught at Indiana Wesleyan University since the 1940s, and have been an integral part of the University during all this time. The former name of the school was Marion College but changed to Indiana Wesleyan University in 1988. Teter Hall was the home of the Art Department for over 40 years. The new Beard Art Center came into being in 1992. With these new facilities we have broadened our art offerings to meet the demands of the additional courses for the students. Indiana Wesleyan University is a member of the Christian Coalition.

6) Dordt College Art Department: If the eye is the portal to the soul, a visit to the campus of Dordt College illuminates the importance this campus community places on art, its creation, and the cultivation of God's gifts to his people. Two galleries and a variety of campus art acquisitions displayed in every public space contribute to a richer, fuller atmosphere for the entire campus community.

7) Baylor University: In an increasingly visual world, the demand for the skills of artists and designers is growing. Whether creating with paint, pencil or charcoal on canvas or paper; with tactile materials such as clay, fibers, metal or wood; with light on photographic paper; or with ixels on a computer screen - artists and designers play a key role in communicatinf ideas, information and aesthetics.

8) Biola University Visual Arts Department: For more than 15 years Department of Art has been an acknowledged leader in visual arts education. Today Biola alumni are working throughout the United States and around the world in a wide range of arts and art-related fields. At Biola University, art majors are equipped with the aesthetic, technical, and conceptual skills necessary for success in the 21st century. The art program emphasizes understanding and responding to contemporary visual arts culture- its socio-political, philosophical and spiritual concerns. 9) Calvin College Art Department: The mission of Calvin's Department of Art and Art History is to provide pedagogical excellence within the context of a Christian liberal arts education by preparing students with the skills, knowledge, and values, necessary for becoming effective agents of cultural renewal in the visual arts. Calvin offers B.A. programs in studio art, art education and art history as well as a rigorous B.F.A. program for students intending to pursue full-time careers in art. The department also houses a liberal arts-based pre-architecture program. Adjacent to classroom and studio facilities on campus is the Center Art Gallery, which maintains an active exhibition schedule featuring work by outside artists as well as faculty and students. 11) Taylor University: The Visual Arts Department at Taylor University offers major degree programs in Studio Art, Computer Graphic Arts and Art Education as well as minors in Studio Art and Graphic Design, with an emphasis on how faith informs our understanding of the arts. The department is housed in a new 38,000 sq. ft. facility with a state-of-the-art computer design lab, 2 galleries, and studios specifically designed and outfitted for each of the 8 media areas. 12) Union University: Union University is committed to be excellence-driven, Christ-focused, people-centered, and future-directed. The Department of Art provides an environment and curriculum devoted to developing skills, stimulating critical thinking, and expressing creativity within the framework of a Christian liberal arts program. Students complete a four-course visual foundations sequence, a four-course art history sequence, and intensive visual studies in one primary area of concentration and one secondary area: drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography, graphic design or digital media studies. Students may also receive K-12 teacher licensure. 17) Northwest Nazarene University: We aim to provide students with fundamental experiences in the visual arts by developing visual awareness, the ability to make aesthetic judgments, and an appreciation for art forms in every-day life. Courses are designed to study the art of historic and contemporary cultures, to provide opportunities to develop specialized skills, and to equip students to participate in a professional environment or to pursue further studies. 18) Whitworth University: In keeping with Whitworth's mission, the art department strives to develop in its students an awareness and appreciation of God's world. Professionally active faculty members whose works have won awards at exhibits and juried competitions throughout the nation encourage students to participate in art to enhance their life experiences, to develop skills and concepts through theory and practice, and to immerse themselves intellectually and spiritually. In 2008, the Whitworth Art Department is scheduled to move into a new two-story, 20,000-square-foot building that will house six studios and an impressive new gallery space. The $7.1 million facility is designed to allow long-term expansion and will serve Whitworth students for decades to come. It will take advantage of consistent north-facing light for its studios and has an ample yard area off the first floor for ceramics kilns and delivery access to mixed media and sculpture studios. A state-of-the-art design lab will feature Apple computers, and faculty members' offices will be large enough to double as studios for these practicing artists.

19)Asbury College: The Asbury College Art Department offers concentrations in painting, sculpture, ceramics, stained glass, printmaking, drawing, graphic design, photography and art history. All studio students are provided with studio space and complete a senior exhibit prior to graduation. Art history students pursue internships and public presentation of research. An hour and a half south of Cincinnati, Asbury College is located in the beautiful Bluegrass region outside of Lexington, Kentucky, across the street from Asbury Theological Seminary.

Galleries

1) Eyekons: The Eyekons Gallery, located in Grand Rapids, is an exhibition space that showcases original work by the artists of Eyekons. Our goal is to present innovative art that creatively explores the religious imagination. A wide range of artists will be showcased featuring many diverse styles of art. Each exhibition will be highlighted online with special features about the artist and their work. Original work by the artists of Eyekons will also be featured and made available for sale in the "archived exhibits" section of our Gallery.

2) JHS Gallery Sacred Art and Iconography: JHS Gallery is a destination gallery for sacred art in New Mexico. The gallery features fine devotional and liturgical art by established, mid-career and emerging artists. Our offerings range in style from traditional to contemporary and representational to abstract. Many of the gallery artists welcome work on a commission basis. The gallery's name is an acronym for Jesus Humanidad Salvador. It was named in honor of the great Spanish saint, Teresa of Avila, who signed her letters with this monogram.

Seminaries With Art Programs

1) Fuller Theological Seminary - The Brehm Center: The Brehm Center for Worship, Theology and the Arts began on the campus of Fuller Theological Seminary in 2001. The core of the Brehm Center’s mission is to enhance worship in the church and make it deeper and more cohesive through the use of the arts.
